Saints got off to a flyer as Rainhill "A" were the visiters to Queens Park on the opening day of the season.
Saints had a full squad to pick from today and the lads who started, quickly settled into the game.
From the first proper attack Saints opened the scoring,Ryan with a powerful drive into the roof of the net from a tight angle. From the restart Rainhill put some pressure on the Saints back line but as always they held their line and must have played Rainhill offside at least 5-6 times throughout the first half.
Saints started to put Rainhill under more pressure with wave after wave of attacking play, soon they were 2-0 up,Saints striker Liam Lane scoring an easy tap in after Sam had hit the bar.We didn`t have to wait long before Ryan got his 2nd and Saints 3rd goal,a great strike that took a slight nick of a Rainhill defender and nestled into the net.3-0 Saints. With half time approaching Saints made it 4-0,after a Rainhill attack was broken down Sean Doyle fed the ball to Sam who went on a mazy run through the heart of the Rainhill defence only to be tackled,as the ball broke free Saints defender Alex Burke took control and fired a wonderful strike from 25yds out that flew into the Rainhill goal.Half time Saints 4-0 Rainhill.
There was`nt much to say to the lads at the interval apart from just to keep going and to keep it tight.
The lads responded as the 2nd half got underway Ryan quickly getting his hatrick, scoring with a nice touch at the near post after a Saints corner. With saints 5-0 up Gary made some changes and it goes to show that this season we have strength in depth as the lads carried on after the changes and went on to score 2 more goals, again Ryan getting his FOURTH with a wonderful towering header,a great goal and well deserved. As the match was nearing the final whistle Saints sub Owen Gannon hit a tremendous strike that hit the bar and there was Danny Clayton to score an easy tap in to make the final score Saints 7-0 Rainhill.
A great start to the season for Saints today as all the preperation throughout the summer finally paid off. What the team did today was excellent with the back four doing extremely well at the offside rule,Rainhill only had 1 or 2 chances today,so well done Matty,Thomas,Ryan,Alex and Ben.
Midfield worked hard and all the boys did well breaking play up and winning the majority of their tackles.Sean playing the holding role really well,Sam as always showing his determination to ride the tackle and get himself into scoring positions. The wide players did themselves proud Tom,Adam,Elliott,Charlie and Jordan all doing well.
Saints forward line today was also good, with Liam and Danny getting on the scoresheet,Kyle also doing well and his link up play was great.
Finally in goal was Danny Smith who never put a foot wrong showing all his best qualities between the posts, a massive well done to Danny and a clean sheet as well.
Next up for Saints are Newton Le-Willows away on Tuesday.Good luck lads and keep up the good work.
